Welcome to COM Week

Flagler College's annual Communication Week has been a campus tradition since 2005. Started by Rosemary Tutt, the goal was to offer students in St. Augustine the chance to network with professionals the way that students in bigger schools or bigger cities could.

That mission still stands today - connecting students to communication professionals from around the world and opening their eyes to the breadth of opportunities available for students who study communication. In 2024, COM Week will celebrate its 19th year. Over the years, speakers have included Pulitzer Prize winners, authors, war correspondents, digital content creators, agency executives, photographers, health communicators, not-for-profit founders, producers, directors, influencers, filmmakers, many Flagler grads and more. The week also serves to highlight and celebrate students' projects and achievements both in their work at Flagler College and after graduation.

COM Week 2024

Follow the Money

By 2025, the world will be churning out a mind-blowing 463 billion gigabytes of data per day, experts say. Making sense of the relentless flow of information from computers, mobile phones, television and other platforms can be maddening.

Misinformation, AI-generated content and deepfakes further complicate America’s media landscape, but some old-school advice can help unravel some of the mysteries: Follow the money.

The 1970s catchphrase, the theme of this year’s Communication Week, urged journalists to follow the money to find political corruption. Today following the money can help anyone better understand what’s behind the overwhelming and sometimes confusing onslaught of content we all face. Money is used to pay for websites, hire TikTok influencers and promote brands. It’s used to publish newspapers, produce videos and fund public relations campaigns. It’s the glue that keeps our chaotic and fragmented media landscape from falling apart.

Following the money also can help us determine what’s credible and what’s not. Following the money can help find the truth. Join us March 4 to March 7 as we follow the money during a series of speakers, panels, workshops and other events.
